Awful wifi signal out of the box (its an outdoor camera, it should cope with external walls!), so I invested in a couple of external wireless APs (so another 80 quid) signal outside is now very strong, however these XT2s connect to the external APs fine. About 1 meter away, 4 bars, success!? but as soon as activity happens and the sync module gets involved such as updating stats, live view etc the wifi drops to 1 bar as if its ditching the external AP and reconnecting to the internal wifi.
External AP has same ssid, same encryption, same username, same password. As far as anything else is concerned (phone, laptop, tablet, car) its the same connection.
Returning this and trying Ring wired, though also being Amazon, they aren't loosing out...
These are really good cameras but with a few flaws.
1. Night vision is useless! There is no way you could identify whether or not someone is male or female let alone any facial detail. I'm hoping software will be updated for this as the hardware is up to scratch.
2. The brackets supplied are flimsy and I'm sure it was invented by the same person that was in charge of night vision. Buy your own brackets. (I bought a set of three on Amazon for £16)
3. The base unit uses a usb plug but is WiFi controlled so doesn't have to be next to your router but it's supplied with a cable that's just over a foot long. Which means it just hangs from most sockets very untidily. I'd recommend buying a bracket to neaten this up ( also available on Amazon for about a tenner).
Things I like,
1. Free cloud storage although quite limited.
2. Battery life is allegedly 2yrs but I will update this post when mine run out.
3. Schedule power on and off. Allowing you to not get notifications when the kids are playing in the garden.
4. Specific area movement detection. Stopping false notifications.
Overall if you buy your own brackets, buy a plug stand to neaten it up and are willing to wait for the night vision upgrade or have outside lighting it's a good cheap camera system.
After two months one of my cameras has ran out of batteries, when changing them the plastic was all melted inside.
I've googled this and a lot of people have reported having faults where the batteries have shorted.
They have now been returned.
As usual, the item arrived stupidly quickly and was extremely well packaged. When i decided that i wanted to buy some sort of camera system for home i already knew that the thought of running wires everywhere did not appeal to me in the slightest. After watching many reviews i decided to plump for the Blink system.Looking at most security camera systems lists of parts included in the box it is no wonder that some people feel that the fitting of said items seems a very daunting prospect.Upon opening the box and getting the first glimpse of the Blink system that is the first thing that hits you, wow, there is hardly anything in here.
Don`t let that put you off.On examining the cameras i could not get over just how small the cameras were which was great,i didn't want a great big in your face system,i just wanted a discreet little system that would perform adequately.Set up was astonishingly easy. After installing the app onto the phone it is just a case of removing the back cover of camera and popping the batteries in,the app then walks you through and even scans the QR codes to make the job even easier to connect to wifi. Two screws mount the brackets on the wall and then it is just a case of click fitting the cameras on.Please note that the push and click mounting is really easy it does mean that it is not advisable to fit the camera low down as someone could quite easily just walk up and pull it off so i think they should have been made with some sort of security tool needed to fix/unfix them. One other niggle is that the camera can only be turned so far on the supplied bracket and because the camera sits not very far off the wall it is not for instance possible to set the camera to look extreme left or right or even sharply down to the floor from up high.Having said that the field of view is 180 degrees and other brackets are available to purchase that fit further off the wall allowing greater movement.
I personally cannot fault the quality of the picture and the two way audio is awesome. For me,being able to customise the motion detection areas is a great feature along with the free cloud storage and the app which makes everything so easy to do.I found that you need to take the time to find the best position to place the sync module to get the best signal connection to your cameras ,you can do this by going back in to the app and refreshing the camera each time until you are satisfied. If you are looking for a system that is easy to install, performs reliably, good picture quality, free to use(including storage) with reliable alerts and an easy to use app then the Blink system may well be for you.Speaking for myself, that is what i wanted so to that extent it certainly does deliver, perhaps if i wanted any more then i would need to empty my bank account and get me electricians toolkit out that i don`t have.Hope this helps, cheers
Genuinely really disappointed this product does not work as I had such high hopes for it.
First off, Blink's customer service is amazing, but to honest it needs to be as the product is not fit for purpose.
The whole experience feels like I paid £400 for a product still in ‘Beta Test'.
The cameras kept losing connection and failing to pick up motion and the Night Vision is next to useless. After a lengthy call to Blink Technical helpline they confirmed that the system will not work with ‘mesh WiFi' or dual band systems and to return the product, (despite stating it does work on Blink website). I sent a screen shot of night vision and they said this is normal, but they are working to resolve it!
Managed to reconfigure my WiFi to get the system working only now to experience motion alerts every five minutes despite the movement occurring in inactive zone.
Another call (to their excellent Tech People) and sent a couple of videos. They admitted straight away that if the motion alert (even in inactive zone) is caused by anything warm eg: vehicle, person, animal, reflection etc then the motion detection cannot be disabled. I questioned that this again was the opposite to that stated on their website, the reply was that QVC website hasn't been changed yet but Blink / Amazon had recently been updated.
I bought this product on the basis that it had the might of Amazon behind it so it must be good, the product just isn't ready to put to market. I'm returning mine, avoid!!!!!
Nice idea and the picture quality is superb. However, I will be returning the system as not fit for purpose. Firstly, I bought the two camera system and only one of the cameras will pair to the system, the other one absolutely refuses to connect.
Secondly, no matter what settings I choose, and believe me I have tried them all, the camera WILL NOT record more than a maximum of 11 seconds of video, usually between 5 and 8 seconds which is frankly useless. Motion detection appears to work but by the time the camera starts recording, the person has already walked halfway across the field of view and sometimes they're already gone as evidenced by recordings triggered that show no movement whatsoever.
Most times the camera does catch somebody lingering about the recording stops within ten seconds and you have no idea whether or not that person is now gone or still there up to no good.
Live view is also a joke. It's not my connection. The connected camera, in it's desired location, is showing as full strength connection to my WiFi network which in turn is connected to a 300mb fibre internet connection. It is NOT my network setup causing these issues.
As it is these second generation cameras need a lot of improvement.
Terrible - absolutely terrible. Installed quickly enough. Setup was easy. Picture is good in daylight. That's all the positives out of the way.
Motion detection is simply non existent. Despite both cameras being armed. They are incapable of capturing me walking around in my back garden or down my path at the front.
Contacted support. They came back saying they could see I had two cameras. Which one was a problem. Using words like “neither' or ‘both' didn't seem enough for them to comprehend I meant all of the ones registered to my system, 2, which they can see.
Have ensured both are armed. Both have a clear line of sight. Using ALFRED previously and usingbold mobile phones, these could even captures cats in the back garden. So far two days in Blink hasn't caught me, or the postman walking right in front of the cameras down a long path!! I've even Dan Ed in front of both of them!
Both or should I say all of the cameras I have are armed, sensitivity turned to max.
Today I am now inundated with alerts. Yet when viewed there is nothing on them!!
Next part. Loud storage. This is very slow. Lips don't download and despite having space and the keep time set to 14 days. Some clips I've recorded disappear without me physically deleting them.
No option to have a time stamp on the footage is another glaring omission.
I'm returning mine as they must be broken. Another friend is happy with his setup which seems to work.
