I work in the IT industry, so understand the technology, and I am fortunate enough to have a relatively new house with new wiring. I have installed DEVOLO powerline adapters in multiple locations. The main "hub" is plugged directly into its own single 13A socket and is connected to my broadband router with a short (1M), high quality Cat6 cable. The DEVOLO adapters are in 4 locations around the house, all of which are on the same ring main and breaker.

Now, all 4 adapters connect to the hub just fine and according to the DEVOLO COCKPIT software are achieving between 200Mbps and 300Mpps (which is significantly less than the advertised up to 1200Mbps). However, using an industry speed check application (on both wired LAN and wifi connections) I get very much slower real speeds. The router itself is running a rock-solid 74Mbps (the Openreach Fibre cabinet in our road is only a 100m from our home). This is fed into the DEVOLO hub via LAN and the result at the other end adapters varies from 33Mbps down to 1.7Mbps. However, this is not consistent at all: I can check in the same location, right next to a DEVOLO adapter and get different speed at different times. Some days I can stream high-quality Netflix but other days, it struggles to deliver even the lowest level YouTube video without buffering.

So, I rang DEVOLO support. The chap I spoke to was very insistent that these units are very good; the best available! First he tried to blame the wiring (until I explained the house was new) then the circuits (until I told him the Devolos were all on the same ring/breaker) and finally he told me that something must be interfering with the signal, e.g. LED lights can affect the DEVOLO transmission. SO, I tried switching all the lights off in the house and by torchlight, re-tested speeds. Much improved! I now get around 35Mbps all the time, everywhere. OK, so I have somehow lost about half of the bandwidth coming into the router but at least I can now stream high-quality video in each room of our home!

That is as long as we don't mind doing so it the dark. As my house is relatively new, almost all of the lights are dimmable LEDs. Indeed, we are all being encouraged, country-wide to replace all our traditional tungsten and halogen bulbs for low-power LEDs. But these are NOT COMPATIBLE WITH DEVOLO POWERLINE ADAPTERS.

So, I have bundled all the adapters up and listed them on eBay in the hope that I can sell the to someone with no LED lighting and recoup some of the large expense I lost in buying DEVOLO POWERLINE ADAPTERS. I switched to a Mesh System with 4 Wifi repeaters. The result is that I get 74Mbps at each Mesh point and at least 58Mbps pretty much everywhere.

Conclusion? If you want to be Eco-friendly and fit LED bulbs, don't buy Devolo powerline kits as they just wont deliver what they promise,

This product is a poor execution of a brilliant idea. I bought 6 of them to improve WIFI coverage and network connectivity in my property. It was working fine with occasional freezing of one of the adaptors randomly. After the recent update of firmware with the WIFI mesh capability, they started playing up. One of the adaptors within the group of 6 goes offline randomly. Even after a factory restore and the re installation of the adaptors does not make this issue go away. The issue transfers from one adaptor to another randomly regardless of the physical location of the adaptor. Removing the faulty one doesn't help either, it is always one in a group and the issue travels only affecting the devolo 1200 +WIFI. Until they fix this please don't waste your money.

Devolo gave me a new firmware to fix this. However no joy. According to them this is a known issue. The power line performance is also less than average if you have a large house.

I other than the fact that they're a little on the large size and that the Ethernet ports are on the top, rather than the bottom of the unit (which I knew before i purchased) I am extremely pleased with these. My old AV500s (not Devolo brand) gave me around 70-80mbps, whereas I'm now getting around 270mbps.

**RECOMMENDATION**
For anyone looking to buy these, please note that I have 4 of them quite happily working with each other and that you don't have to buy the much more expensive (at the time of writing this review) starter kit for them to work (you just need a minimum of 2 units). Save your money and don't be fooled into thinking the starter kit contains some sort of ‘master unit' that this kit won't work without!

I already had a dLAN system in the house - to extend wifi into a room far from my home hub.
I was adding CCTV cameras in my garage but the existing wifi signal wasn't strong enough.
By adding the Add-on Powerline Adapter I was able to set up a second wifi hub directly in the garage providing 100% wifi stability.
Great product, easy to set up and very happy with it.

Small one connected to router, big one is the extension.
Out of the box, it's a well built (think Apple) pair of devices. There are only a few instructions and they're presented in one or two concise lines and are supported with pictures. We now have 32Mbps d/l and 10 u/l in the back room upstairs, with the router in the corner of the front room downstairs! So yes, it does work.
BUT!!!!
You must ensure that you have plugged the correct device of the two into the router. My instinct was to plug the big one into the router as a sort of main unit and to use the smaller one upstairs, as an extender. It's the other way around.

I have 5 devolo adapters. All work really well. My router is located in the ground floor of my house and I can get a signal through my devolo set up in my attic. This is significant not only because of the distance involved but because the adapters are all on different circuits. I have tried other makes but they just didn't work when connected to different ring circuits. I have a friend who has found this to be the case in his house too. I use them for internet connection for another computer elsewhere in the house (using an ethernet cable from the adapter to the computer) and for wifi connection throughout the house. I also use them to connect smart TVs and a blue ray player to the internet.
